There is something about a bright white smile that is automatically appealing, perhaps because it conveys a sense of youthfulness and general good health.

All too often teeth can look dingy and discoloured, especially if you have a fondness for coffee or tea or for a glass of red wine. Other lifestyle factors can also take their toll and include smoking, eating a lot of very acidic foods which can erode your tooth enamel.

The colour of your teeth is determined by genetics and teeth can darken just because you are getting a bit older. Whatever the reason, modern dentistry can provide some excellent solutions, often very affordably, and which include professional teeth whitening. Prior to any whitening treatment, we will need to make sure you have a healthy mouth.

Whitening Your Teeth Safely

Before you have any form of teeth whitening treatment, it’s essential to ensure you do not have any signs of tooth decay or gum disease. Otherwise, if you were to try to whiten your teeth, then you could experience quite a bit of tooth sensitivity or even pain, and there is the risk you could worsen your dental health. It is always our top priority to make sure that every treatment provided here at Tsawwassen Place Dental is safe and appropriate.

Also, teeth whitening produces slightly different outcomes for everybody because the colour of your teeth is unique. It can also depend on the reasons for your tooth staining because specific tooth stains may respond differently or not quite as well as others. For example, some tooth stains are internal and need to be treated slightly differently. Another thing to remember is that if you have any old crowns, bridges or veneers, then teeth whitening will not change the colour. If needed, we can always discuss replacing any ageing restorations and the newer porcelains available today can look fantastic. Once we are sure teeth whitening is the right treatment for you, we can talk about which method will suit you best.

Whitening In-Office

An in-office whitening treatment is quick and effective and will brighten your teeth by several shades during a single appointment. It is the ideal solution if you have a special event soon, or simply want to see your brighter, whiter smile as quickly as possible.

Or Choose a Custom Whitening Kit

Alternatively, we can provide you with your own customized home whitening kit. It will include custom-made whitening trays that fit precisely and comfortably over your teeth, and we will provide the correct strength of professional-grade whitening gel and which is very safe for home use. You will need to wear the trays for a few hours each day, or overnight for about two weeks. Some people find it preferable to whiten more slowly and like the thought of having more control over the process. Also, you can re-use your whitening trays later, provided your teeth don’t change shape, position or their size.

After whitening, our dentists Dr. Sarah Harland and Dr. Tom Keene can provide lots of advice on how to care for your teeth and how to prolong the outcome of treatment.

How Long Will Teeth Whitening Last?

Most people will find their teeth look considerably brighter for a year or so after treatment, but it all depends on your diet and other lifestyle factors. Ensuring you have your teeth cleaned professionally every six months will help to prolong the effects, and it is excellent for your dental health too! Eventually, you will need to top up the results to maintain a bright and beautiful smile.
